Returning to Flight is the first step in NASA’s Vision for Space Exploration. After the Columbia incident on February 1, 2003, CAIB proposed pages of suggestions for improvements. One of them was eliminating ice build up around the Liquid Oxygen Feedline Bellows area. Cracks on the Orbiter wing created by the ice debris were attributed to direct cause of Columbia disintegration.

Dr. Chung approached those who are in charge of Space Shuttle External Tank, proposed anti-icing system, acquired development contract, produced flight hardware, performed significant qualification testing, and finally delivered qualified flight hardware. At the NASA News conference held on April 29, 2005, Discovery launch date was delayed from May 22, 2005 to July 13-31, 2005 window in order to install Dr. Chung’s anti-ice heating system, despite high expense related to rolling back Discovery from launch pad to VAB(Vehicle Assembly Building).

NASA team members recognized Dr. Chung for his contribution to successful launch of the Discovery.

Dr. Chung’s presentation focuses on one’s vision, devotion, sacrifice, seamless efforts, and investments related to winning a race in the U.S., specially for KSEA young generation.
